What is a Health Check?
| Private Health Screening Explained
What is a Health Check?
A health check is a structured medical assessment designed to evaluate your overall health, identify early signs of disease, and reduce future health risks. Often referred to as health screening or an annual medical, it focuses on prevention rather than treatment.
Private health checks are typically doctor-led, combining a clinical consultation with targeted tests such as blood work and cardiovascular assessment.
Why Are Health Checks Important?
Many common conditions — including heart disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol — can develop without noticeable symptoms.
A preventative health check helps to:
Detect early signs of illness
Identify risk factors before symptoms appear
Establish a baseline for future comparison
Support long-term health and wellbeing
Early detection often allows for simpler, more effective treatment.
What Does a Health Check Involve?
A comprehensive health check usually includes a combination of:
Medical consultation with a doctor
Blood pressure and cardiovascular and respiratory assessment
Blood tests (e.g. cholesterol, glucose, liver and kidney function)
Weight, BMI, and lifestyle review
Personalised health recommendations
Depending on your needs, additional tests such as ECGs, lung function tests or extended blood panels may be included.
Who Should Have a Health Check?
Health checks are suitable for a wide range of individuals, including:
Adults wanting an annual health check
Professionals seeking an executive health screening
Individuals with a family history of medical conditions
Those monitoring ongoing health concerns
Anyone looking for reassurance about their health
Even if you feel well, a health check can provide valuable insight into your future risk.
How Often Should You Have a Health Check?
For most people, a yearly health check is appropriate.
However, frequency may vary depending on:
Age
Medical history
Lifestyle factors
Existing risk conditions
A doctor can advise on the most suitable interval for you.
