Traditional Chinese acupuncture treatment is increasingly used for chronic pain relief. It has also been found to be useful in helping relieve stress and anxiety. Clinical trials have demonstrated that acupuncture triggers the release of a natural compound called adenosine. This is known to have pain relieving and anti-inflammatory properties. Acupuncture is a safe, gentle treatment with a long established history.

Traditional acupuncture is based on the belief that an energy flows through the body in certain channels. This force is known as Qi (pronounced “chee”). Illness, in this theory, is caused by blockage of these energy channels and by using acupuncture these can be restored.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) provides guidelines on the use of treatments and care of patients. Currently, NICE recommends considering acupuncture as a treatment option for:

  • Chronic tension-type headaches
  • Migraines

Acupuncture is also often used to treat other musculoskeletal conditions including:

  • Chronic pain, such as neck pain
  • Joint pain
  • Dental pain
  • Postoperative pain

The London Harley Street Practice is happy to introduce this aspect of complementary medicine for our patients. A course of acupuncture is preferred as it is known to create longer lasting pain relief than a single treatment session alone.
